COVID-19 has significantly disrupted traditional in-person learning in remote areas of the Philippines. Online learning is not an option, as marginalized populations have no smart phones, electricity, or internet access. Public school teachers have to print out educational materials and hand-deliver them house to house. Below is the actual request for help from the school principal.
In November, 2021, Philippine Children's Charity in-country Officer, Ms. Czarina Lee, organized a team to purchase and personally deliver a printer to a remote school in the province of Zamboanga del Norte. This printer will generate educational materials for 270 economically desperate children.
Actual email message for help:
Mabuhay Po.
Thank you for your response relative to our request. I am the School Principal of Dumalogdog Elementary School in Sindangan , Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines situated eastern part of the town Sindangan, accessible only by habal- habal drive. Printed modular learning has been implemented in our school for almost a year now. We currently have 270 learners from Kindergarten to Grade 6. 40% of them are indigenous natives known as Subanen. As of today, we do not have a large machine, or what we call as risograph machine, to use for the reproduction of learning activity sheets.
In this school year, we are still implementing this modular learning and we have a hard time in photocopying since we only use small printer in school that can only accommodate small number of copies of activity sheets.
In our area, there is no printing company yet and it is hard for us to have done it in printing companies. All our schools here take charge of printing on our own expense. Aside from these printed modules/ activity sheets, our learners also are in need of plastic envelopes/ bags where these materials are to be kept during distribution and retrieval of modules.
Aside from those, we also need coloring and art materials, pens and pencils, food supplies for feeding of wasted learners, computer/ laptop for research purposes, paper and ink for study materials. You can share all these stuffs directly to our learners. As much as possible, we encourage transparency in our operations.
I hope this gives you a comprehensive view of our situation here. Hope to hear more of your response. Thank you and God bless.
Sincerely yours,
Albert D. Hisoler
